OpenNMSOpenNMS is an open source network/server management system. OpenNMS is a software program which gathers vital date relating to the health and performance of BYUH servers and network devices. For example, OpenNMS is aware of the various email servers, web servers, network switches and routers. In the event of a server or network failure, OpenNMS sends email alerts to on-call employees to alet them of the outage. This automated system helps BYUH maintain a higer level of availability to network resources for students, staff, and faculty. In addition, the vital statistics (CPU utlization, memory usage, and network consumption, etc...) of BYUH servers can be visualized graphically and historically to aid in troubleshooting performance problems like, "Why is my.byuh.edu slow today?" and "Why is the internet so slow?"
Here is an example graph which shows one of BYUH's internet connections. The graph depicts a 24-hour period.
